Horseback Ride on the Cathar Trail from Cucugnan

Travel Through Occitania from the Corbières with Cheval Cathare

This is undoubtedly one of the most famous and oldest equestrian routes in France.

The Cathar Trail takes you through Occitania from Corbières to Montségur. On these ancient paths once trodden by the famous bonshommes (Cathar clergy), we'll take you to see the citadelles du vertige (dizzying citadels) including: QUÉRIBUS, PEYREPERTUSE, PUIVERT and MONTSÉGUR.

You’ll also discover a rich diversity of landscapes: from the land and scents of the Mediterranean, we gradually move on to forests and mountain pastures. You'll experience this mythical journey in the company of a passionate guide and her gentle, athletic horses.

Day 1 : Sunday

Visit Quéribus Castle, and enjoy your first 360° panoramic view of the Corbières, the sea and the Pyrenees from the top of the keep. To continue immersing yourself in the ambiance, visit the traditional village of Cucugnan and the theater where you'll hear Alphonse Daudet's famous story, Le Curé (The Priest).

Meet starting at 6 p.m. at the Cucugnan equestrian farm : Introduction to the horses, the team and the ride, meal and night in our unique accommodations.

Day 2 : Monday

Saddle up to the heights of Cucugnan for panoramic views of the village and the Corbières. Beautiful galloping trails take us to Duilhac-sous-Peyrepartuse, overlooking the Peyrepertuse Citadel, which was the largest fortress in Europe in the Middle Ages. The castle has inherited many evocative nicknames: "the stone vessel", "the dizzying citadel", "the celestial Carcassonne".

We leave the Mediterranean landscape for the first beech forests. Our ride leads us to the small villages of Cubières-sur-Cinoble and Camps-sur-l'Agly.

Meal and night at La Bastide lodge, an ancient 13th-century Templar fortified town at the foot of Pech de Bugarach, where Ingrid and Fred await us.

Day 3 : Tuesday

We climb the trails to Pech de Bugarach (alt. 1200 m). This imposing peak, often surrounded by a halo of mist, has been the subject of mysterious stories, a geological curiosity haunted by legends... We cross the hamlet of Campeau, abandoned for several decades, then the pretty meadows of the Malabrac Plateau invite us to gallop. We leave the meadows for the paths through the ancient royal forest of Les Fanges, heading for Belvianes-et-Cavirac, where we follow the Aude to our night at La Forge lodge in Quillan.

Day 4 : Wednesday

We leave Quillan on the GR 367 trail via Ginoles and a beautiful undergrowth path to Coudons. We skirt the Plateau de Sault, then after Nébias, another change of scenery, with a beautiful view of Puivert Plain. And finally, we get a glimpse of Puivert Castle. Who hasn't dreamed of crossing the drawbridge of a castle on horseback and tying up their mount in the vast inner courtyard in the shadow of the ramparts? Here, the fantasy comes to life!

Meal and night in Puivert.

Day 5 : Thursday

A wide variety of landscapes brighten up this day: Picaussel Forest, Sault Plateau for galloping, panoramic views of Lavelanet and Pog de Montségur, and finally Comus, a traditional village at the gateway to the Ariège.

Night at Comus lodge.

Day 6 : Friday

A day full of excitement: the narrow gorges of La Frau, the steep ascent of Pelail, where our little horses will once again prove their mettle, and finally Montségur, symbol of the Cathars that defied the invaders from its rocky perch for many years before coming to a tragic end... Visit the castle.
