Horseback Ride on the Route des Cols

Explore the Ariège Pyrenees with Cheval Cathare

Cheval Cathare takes you on a ride that combines history and high mountains... At altitudes between 1000 and 2000 m, you'll experience the magic of the wide-open spaces of the Pyrenees: the Sault and Aillou Plateaus, the Chioula ridges and mountain pastures with immense panoramic views over the whole mountain range, and of course the mythical Cathar castle of Montségur.

A simple, authentic experience, an itinerary to discover the Ariège Pyrenees, where time seems to stand still...

Please note! This tour runs in the Espousouille - Montségur direction from August 24 to 31, with arrival at Espoussouille (66) on Sunday evening and return to Espousouille on Friday evening.

Day 2 : Monday

We saddle up, leaving behind us the castle of Montségur, capital and seat of the Cathar Church that withstood almost a year of siege, then came to a tragic end... We skirt around Frau Mountain via La Redoule Woods, where we build up speed to climb to La Peyre Pass (alt. 1725 m). First 360° panorama of Montségur to the north and the Pyrenees to the south. Via the Prades Forest trails, we arrive at the village of Camurac.
Meal and night at Camurac lodge.

Day 3 : Tuesday

We cross the gorgeous and luminous Pays d’Aillou. This small, undulating plateau is dotted with traditional villages, including Montaillou, made famous by the book Montaillou, village occitan (Montaillou, Occitan Village), here in the heart of Cathar history. Once over Balagues Pass, we are at the upper level of the immense Chioula ridge.

Meal and night at the Chioula panoramic lodge-refuge (alt. 1650 m). From the terrace, we have a breathtaking view of the entire mountain range.

Day 4 : Wednesday

A beautiful day on the ridges between the Aude, Ariège and the Pyrénées Orientales: panoramic views over the whole mountain range and a few gallops through the mountain pastures. We take several passes, including Pailhères Pass (alt. 2001 m).
Camping at Tourrugue Pass.

Day 5 : Thursday

A beautiful day in the mountains through forests and mountain pastures, with beautiful panoramas that will give you a feeling of true freedom. We then descend into Rébenty Valley before reaching La Clause Pass (alt. 1164 m) and following the GR7 to Artigues, where we spend the night.
Meal and night in Artigues.

Day 6 : Friday

We leave the Donezan Plateau and its pretty mountain villages, and pass through beautiful beech forests to the Les Ares Pass (alt. 1608 m). The Capcir Plateau comes into view, offering a beautiful lookout. We reach Espousouille via the Vauban Path.
